The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Monday said it had activated 169 more direct routes along the U.S. East Coast ahead of the busy summer travel season. The direct routes will shave off 40,000 miles and 6,000 minutes of travel time annually, the FAA said.
The new high-altitude highways, developed over seven years in collaboration with the airline industry, aim to give the agency more flexibility to direct traffic to specific routes based on the aircrafts destination and weather conditions. The new routes operate largely above 18,000 feet in altitude along the East Coast, as well as offshore over the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.
The FAA has sunset legacy routes when aircraft largely relied on ground-based radar instead of GPS.
The FAA last month said it may delay some space launches to minimize disruption to commercial air travel and provide “equitable” access to airspace near launch sites.
Space launches have often snarled air schedules, especially in congested Florida airspace. Officials are worried about a repeat of last summer's air travel woes - when more than 50,000 flights were canceled in the United States and hundreds of thousands others delayed - in the face of rising demand and airline and flight control staffing shortages.
Last year, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said airlines should ease congestion at Florida airports by equipping their planes so they can fly over water along routes that have been under-utilized.
The FAA in March agreed to requests by Delta Air Lines DAL.N and United Airlines to temporarily return up to 10% of slots and flight timings this summer at congested New York area airports and Washington National, citing air traffic controller shortages for flights.
The FAA said the decision will give airlines “the ability to reduce operations during the peak summer travel period, which are likely to be exacerbated by the effects of Air Traffic Controller staffing shortfalls.”
The FAA said staffing at the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control remain below targets. Last summer, there were 41,498 flights from New York airports where air traffic control staffing was a contributing factor in delays.

Binary options trading involves predicting whether an asset's price will rise or fall within a specific timeframe. Unlike traditional investing, more specifically, binary options demand rapid decisions due to fixed expiry times (e.g., 60 seconds to 1 hour). For instance, speculating if EUR/USD will be above 1.0800 in the next five minutes. Success yields a fixed payout, while failure results in the loss of invested capital. Binary indicators distill complex market data—price action, volume, volatility—into actionable signals tailored for short-term trades. Indicators act as a compass, guiding traders to trends, reversals, and optimal entry points, thus enabling traders to detect market shifts for higher-probability decisions.
Founded in 2014, Olymp Trade has been operating for over a decade, expanding its services and user base considerably, now offering focused trading in fixed-time trades (previously known as binary options in some regions) and Forex. Specifically, Olymp Trade operates two trading modes: fixed-time trades and forex mode. Fixed-time trades refer to trades with predetermined expiration times, where traders predict market movement directions. Payouts typically range from 70-90% of the investment amount. Forex Mode is a more traditional forex trading approach with variable leverage (up to 1:500 for experienced traders). At the same time, it allows for more sophisticated trading strategies with customisable take-profit and stop-loss orders.
